Description
Artwork:
This sculpture confronts the ongoing struggle over reproductive rights in America, using a uterus crafted from an American flag to represent the nation's direct intrusion into women's bodies and autonomy. Through this piece, I reflect on the ways in which the political landscape has sought to control, regulate, and limit the choices people with uterus' are allowed to make about their own reproductive health. The American flag, is twisted and transformed into the shape of a uterus—an organ that has become a battleground for power and control.
The tension in the piece lies in the material itself: the flag, meant to stand for freedom, is simultaneously a symbol of imposed limitations. The uterus, a life-giving organ, becomes a site of political struggle rather than personal choice. The piece demands that we think about whose rights are prioritized and whose are restricted in the name of governance, and it calls for a reimagining of a future where true freedom includes the right to choose.
Artist Statement:
My work draws upon the intersections of my personal experience, the experiences of others that I witness, identity, and feminist thought. Through printmaking, painting, collage, and photography, I navigate the complexities of femininity, power, and the political dynamics that shape our societal landscape. My goal is to interrogate societal norms and the overlooked personal struggles women face in asserting their identities, to bring awareness to issues that disproportionately affect women. My art becomes a space for this inquiry, where I seek to merge personal crisis with larger political and feminist contexts. Through varied media, I explore the fragmentation of self that comes from living within a patriarchal society. Each work is an attempt to piece together the complexities of being a woman today—emotionally, politically, and personally.I aim to provoke dialogue and create a visual language that encourages viewers to question and reflect on their own positions within these systems.
