Description

Artwork:

This abstracted wood sculpture speaks to the way men are making decisions for women’s health. They feel they are the pinnacle of that power and justify their actions through religious beliefs. Using the Dobbs action, a law created in the year 1868 against abortion rights and upturning Roe in June of 2022, (1973) created a death sentence for many women who would be pushed out of the health care they so desperately needed.  As women are making great strides for themselves in many areas of becoming independent and entrepreneurial in areas of business and other aspects of life. These economic freedoms, hard won are ever so slowly making way to powerful women who have been spearheading change in their lives affecting other women and those men who choose to be a part of this change.  Unfortunately, there will always be those who believe it is a man’s world shutting out other perspectives and dimming their own light.

Artist Statement

My artwork speaks to the ethereal aspects of the spirit in men and women. I use abstracted avian images to foster my ideas in hand carved wooden sculptures. This reminds me how beautiful life is and the spirit within all humans who strive to search for their Higher Power and work to be the best they can.

As an infant, I can remember having a mobile above my crib with birds of different types hanging from it. Being from a military family, flight was a part of my father’s life as he was an aerospace engineer, and my uncle was a helicopter pilot, both in the army. That aspect of leaving the ground into the atmosphere reaching for the heavens leaves much too the imagination.

I choose to do work that expresses my emotions, especially when the world gets ridiculous. Making rebellious statements through art is my way to cope with a world gone mad.
